When you arrive at Sangster Airport in MoBay you will be approached by many folks looking to taxi you to whereever it is you want to go. There are a few things to keep in mind when dealing with these individuals however…First, before agreeing to let anyone drive you anywhere you need to make sure they are JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travellers Association) certified drivers. The vehicle in question will have a RED license plate and have a JUTA sticker in the windshield somewhere. This is very important! DO NOT just get into any ol’ car or van/bus with someone who claims they are a taxi driver no matter how nice they seem or what hustle they try to run on you! Secondly, you will have the option of haggling with these individuals for the best rate. I have taxi’d to Runaway Bay from MoBay for as little as $50 US including tip but most likely you will not find it cheaper than $60 US and you WILL have to haggle this price. Thirdly, DO NOT pay the driver until you arrive at your destination and don’t forget to TIP the driver if you trip was relatively safe and comfortable. Also, taxi drivers may try to stop at certain road side places and get you to do some ’shopping’ while the driver uses the bathroom. If you do not feel comfortable with this don’t hesitate to let the driver know you do not wish to stop anywhere along the way BEFORE you leave from the airport. Taxi drivers in JA will do what they can to make money from you so just be clear and upfront with them right off the bat what you want and dont want, and be firm. It is for these reasons that I normally suggest first times to JA to arrange a ride to their destination through their resort/hotel. Most all inclusives offer this service as part of your vacation package. Have fun, be safe….ONE LOVE!!
