They are supposed to take you anywhere that you tell them to go . No random routes, just transportation to where you want to go.

They are supposed to by law. Taxis are supposed to take a passenger to where the passenger needs to go to.

Taxis don’t have set routes. The driver usually takes different routes, depending on where you are going, and how the traffic is. However, if you are taking a livery cab, watch out. Some drivers tend to take the longer route so they can charge you a higher fare.

Also, if you take a livery cab, make sure it’s a legitimate one. There are some people with regular car that try to pose a real livery cab and pick up fares on the street. If you see people that heckle you on the street asking you if you need a ride, ignore them.

If you are going to take a yellow cab, make sure there is a medallion on the hood, it has the box on top with the taxi number, and the plates match that number.

No, they don’t have set routes, only the buses have set routes, but taxis don’t.

They are SUPPOSED to take you anywhere you want within the five boroughs of New York City, but, in real life, they won’t.

You see, if you ask them to take you out to the middle of nowhere in Brooklyn or Queens, or, heaven forbid, The Bronx, that means that they’ll have to drive BACK to Manhattan empty, which is a waste of time for them so they sometimes refuse, or they pretend that they’re at the very end of their shift so they’d really like to take you, but, gosh, they can’t.

One time I got into a cab and gave the driver an address in Queens, and after driving for a few blocks, he started fooling around with the gearshift lever on the car and pulled over and made me get out because he said the taxi was broken. Of course, as soon as I got out, he sped off because the car was actually just fine, he just didn’t want to go to Queens, that’s all!

That’s why a lot of folks who are desperate to get to somewhere out in the boroughs by cab will get in and give the address they want to go to and then quickly say, “Double the meter,” meaning that they’ll pay the driver double whatever’s on the meter when they get there in order to induce him to take them at all.

    Good luck!… ☺
